The Waseda IAS Reference Library

As a joint research center recognized by the Ministry of Education, the Waseda University Organization for Islamic Area Studies (OIAS) provides reference materials and equipment for the Ministry’s “Promotion of Distinctive Joint Research Centers” program. This program, just one of the ways that the OIAS supports joint research, aims to make joint research more convenient. The following is a list of materials and equipment available to member researchers at the Waseda IAS center’s reference library.


Equipment Available for Use

1) Microfilm Reader (includes printer, computer connection, etc.)

2) Large Format Printer (supports B0 size)

Restrictions
This printer may only be used for joint research, solicited research, and center reinforcement research-related presentations.

Who May Use the Waseda IAS Library

These materials and facilities are made available to recognized researchers and graduate students, as necessary, in accordance with the principles of joint research. Users must meet one of the following criteria.

  • A member of a Ministry of Education research center, or a researcher or assistant working on an MoE solicited or center reinforcement project.
  • A member of the NIHU Program for Islamic Area Studies, or a researcher or assistant working on a NIHU Program IAS project.
  • A researcher or graduate student (or similar) with a clear affiliation.
  • Individuals who do not meet any of the above criteria may be granted usage based on the recognized merits of their request.

How to Use the Waseda IAS Library

Hours
Weekdays 10:00-18:00 (closed during vacations and holidays)
Procedure
Submit your request (specifying equipment and materials) in advance to the Waseda University Organization for Islamic Area Studies by email (info@islam.waseda.ac.jp) or phone (03-5286-1749).
Using materials
Microfilm materials may be viewed and photo-copied at the building 120-4, 3rd floor microfilm reference room. (They may not be borrowed.) Research books may be viewed at the joint research room (building 120-4, room 311). Portions of copyrighted materials may be copied for research purposes, in accordance with article 31 of the copyright law.
Borrowing materials for research
Research books (excluding reference books) may be borrowed for up to 3 months by registered participants in Ministry of Education projects who also meet the user criteria listed above. Submit your request and registration to borrow books to the OIAS. Provide the necessary information for each book being borrowed. If you are interested in borrowing books that are not officially offered for borrowing, contact the OIAS.
